The Sturgeon Moon: August’s Full Moon of Longevity, Strength & Renewal

The Sturgeon Moon: August’s Full Moon of Longevity, Strength & Renewal

The August Full Moon invites us to slow down, take stock, and reconnect with what keeps us rooted.

Late summer carries a different kind of energy.

The days are still warm and bright, but there is a subtle shift in the air—a quiet reminder that the season is changing. The suns rays take on a different tone, a deeper angle, the mountains shape the shadows again.

The August Full Moon, traditionally known as the Sturgeon Moon, arrives at the height of summer, when the earth is abundant and the first subtle signs of autumn begin to appear. It is a moon of longevity, strength, endurance, and renewal—a beautiful time to pause and consider what has sustained us and what we want to carry forward.

Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon?

The name Sturgeon Moon is traditionally associated with the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain regions, where lake sturgeon were historically abundant and an important food staple for indigenous communities in late summer.

But here on the West Coast, sturgeon have their own ancient relationship with the landscape.

Sturgeon & the Fraser River

The Fraser River is home to White Sturgeon, one of the largest and longest-lived freshwater fish in British Columbia. These remarkable beings can live for more than a century, moving through the river’s waters for generations. Sturgeon also hold longstanding cultural and food significance for First Nations along the Fraser River.

For RavenSong, this creates a meaningful connection between August's moon name rooted across the country, and the living landscape of our own home on the West Coast.

From the Fraser River to the Salish Sea, water connects the places around us.

Rivers flow into the ocean; our oceans feeds the land; and the waters that surround Vancouver Island are part of a much larger living ecosystem.

The sturgeon reminds us to look at that system with a sense of longevity and continuity.

What has been here before us?
What sustains us now?
And what will we leave behind for those who come after us?

A Moon of Longevity & Strength

There is something fitting about honouring the sturgeon in August.

These ancient fish are slow-growing and long-lived, carrying an extraordinary sense of endurance. Their lives are measured not simply in seasons, but in generations.

The Sturgeon Moon can offer us a similar invitation: to slow down enough to notice what sustains us.

Not everything that makes us strong is loud.

Sometimes strength is in the quiet moments.
Sometimes it is patience.
Sometimes it is knowing when to adapt, when to keep going, and when to let something go.

August is a natural threshold—a time when summer is still fully present, but change is already beginning around us.

The Sturgeon Moon gives us a moment to pause in that in-between.

The Wisdom of Water

Water offers another beautiful thread through the story of the Sturgeon Moon.

It moves, adapts, finds its way around obstacles. Through mountains and soil, across rivers and into our seas.

Here on Vancouver Island, we are surrounded and sustained by water's many forms. The ocean, rivers, lakes, rain, and coastal mist are woven into our very landscape.

The Fraser River travels from the mountains to the Salish Sea, carrying freshwater, nutrients, and life toward the coast. These waters remind us that nothing exists entirely on its own.

Everything is connected.

Sturgeon Moon Rituals for August

A Full Moon ritual doesn't need to be elaborate. Sometimes, it begins with water.

Run a warm bath, light a candle beside the tub, and add mineral-rich sea salts. Let the evening slow around you. As you soak, imagine the water carrying away the things you don't need to take with you into the next season.

Or step outside beneath the Full Moon and simply listen.

Listen to the night.

Listen to the wind moving through the trees.

Listen to the water, if you're fortunate enough to be near the ocean, a river, or a stream.

At RavenSong, our Full Moon collection follows the rhythm of the seasons, creating small opportunities to bring the moon's changing energy into our everyday rituals.

For August, the August Full Moon Soap and August Full Moon Diffuser Oil share a grounding blend of mountain air, balsam spruce, and red berries, inspired by the wild, green landscape of late summer and the West Coast places we call home.

Use the soap as part of a cleansing bath or shower ritual, or let the diffuser oil fill your space as you reflect, unwind, or simply settle into the evening.

Because ritual doesn't always need to look like ritual.

Sometimes it is a candle flame at the end of a long day.
A warm bath beneath an open window.
A few drops of scent filling a quiet room.

Or simply standing outside beneath the Full Moon and remembering that you are part of something much larger than yourself.

Our business is rooted in Indigenous knowledge, honouring the land, sea, and our ancestral teachings.
