The Story

The West Coast Wildflowers logo is more than an image, it is a story of land, memory, and Indigenous connection across coastal territories.

Curated by Kwakwaka’wakw artist Jessica Chickite of We Wai Kai First Nation, this design captures the spirit of an Indigenous woman who could be anyone, our aunties, our sisters, our matriarchs, ourselves. Her calm presence reflects strength, resilience, and deep-rooted connection to the land. The formline elements woven into the design represent the interconnectedness of First Nations along the coast.

The fireweed rising through the image speaks to the heated summers on the yintah (land) in Witset (formerly Moricetown). Fireweed is not only a symbol of renewal after fire, but also the plant that represents my Laksamshu (fireweed) Clan. A reminder that beauty, strength, and growth can emerge from change. For me, these flowers hold personal meaning. They bring back fond memories of harvesting niwis (soapberries) with my aunties and my grandmother, surrounded by wildflowers, holding a stick and tapping soapberries into our ice cream buckets, it's also known as "Ndn Icecream" but you know it as "Soapberry Ice Cream".

Ultimately, Jessica captured a reflection of transformation, healing, and care through an Indigenous woman healing by land-based connections. It reminds us that we can heal our inner childhood among the wildflowers, plant seeds for future generations and continue our journey of Indigenous resilience and renewal.
